Over the course of the past few weeks, I have noticed a growing animosity on Newsvine, an animosity separated by partisanship which sometimes borders on hatred of the "Other Side" so to speak. I have noticed an increasingly tainted picture of not only adherance to the Newsvine Code of Honor, but in the moderation of threads by the seeders/authors and punishments meted out by the Newsvine staff as well, as becoming increasingly one sided, biased and unfair in both implementation and justification.
After speaking with not only my friends here, but many others from this community who share the same views, opinions and philosophies, I have decided, as the "NEW KID ON THE BLOCK", to address this issue in the hope that as a "COMMUNITY", as Newsvine is called, this extremely important issue can and will be addressed in an impartial, fair and realistic fashion. Collectively, we have decided to join together in a show of solidarity to protest these issues by leaving (UN-OCCUPYING) Newsvine for what appears to be an increasingly unfair and im-balanced system of moderation and punishment directed toward the non-liberal members of this community.
When I first joined Newsvine, I was ecstatic in the hope that I had found a website where I could discuss, debate and commune with others, some of like mind and some not. However, that hope vanished almost from my very first post and has yet to return. Within days of my becoming a member of this community and almost from my departure from the starting gate, I was accused of being what I now know is a re-reg, simply for stating an opinion which differed from the opinions of others who were also commenting. Within a few more days, and after my FIRST comment ever to a certain female member of this community, I was accused of stalking this person when the truth of the matter is, is that I had never before engaged this person in any conversation. My VERY FIRST comment to someone and because the comment was not in line with this person's philosophy, I was accused of being an internet stalker. After repeatedly reading the Code of Honor, it is clear that accusing someone of being both a re-reg and a stalker are COH violations, to wit: #1 - "Above all else, respect others. Address issues and arguments and refrain from making personal attacks", yet no action was taken although I repeatedly messaged the staff to intervene.
As time went on and I was released from the greenhouse, I started to notice the alarming rate with which non-liberal comments were being collapsed by the community, the vast majority of those for nothing more than a difference of opinion. When questioned in general about what is, in my opinion, unfair collapses, the typical response is that the comments are deemed of no value or inflammatory, when the stark reality is, is that they were simply differing/opposing views. Granted this happens on both sides of the coin, this I will readily admit. However, from where I'm sitting, and the facts bear witness to my claims, the collapsing of comments for simple differences of opinion comes far more often from the left than from the right. Anyone who wishes proof of this merely need to read any number of threads and/or articles posted here which are controversial and not of the liberal persuasion.
Rule number 4 of the Code of honor states: "As the host of your column, you are expected to foster healthy, open discussions by setting a good example. Be responsible for the content you submit and exercise impartiality when deleting comments and reporting abuse." Sub paragraph "C" of this rule states further: "Do not delete comments based on disagreement; remove only comments that grossly violate the Code of Honor or the User Agreement." As one who is extremely interested in religious/spiritual type articles, a few weeks ago I visited a thread which was supposed to be exactly that. The author of this article had written an article about Christianity, invited others to debate the merits of this piece, yet in the very first comment left by the author, stated emphatically that any scriptural references would be immediately deleted as off topic. I replied and respectfully challenged the author to justify their insistence that references to scripture could be considered off topic when the entire article was based on Christian views and philosophies. My comment was deleted for being off topic and never restored although I sent repeated and numerous requests to the Newsvine staff to visit this article and see for themselves the gross amount of Code of Honor violative moderation being displayed by the author. As of the date of this writing I have yet to receive a response from the Newsvine staff concerning this issue.
On a recent thread concerning the current Herman Cain controversy, there were some comments made by the author which were collapsed because this person called those defending Herman Cain racists. That comment was restored, yet others have been suspended and/or banned for this type of repeated attack.
Additionally, I, as have many others, have noticed an increasingly amount of unfair suspensions which lean toward supporting the left more than the right. I have seen liberals receive a mere warning or a one day suspension for what non-liberals receive a week or more for. Again, the evidence is readily available on the very pages of this website. One of my friends here recently received a one day suspension for simply questioning the stance of another viner. Is not the purpose of this website as per the Code of Honor to foster healthy discussion/debate? How then is it possible to get suspended for questioning the stance of another member of this community as long as that questining does not violate the Code of Honor? And not only this, but it actually involves the unfair treatment of anyone who isn't a hard line liberal which would include independents and libertarians as well. Across the board, anyone who isn't a hard line liberal gets treated more unfairly on Newsvine than those of the hardline liberal persuasion.
"THE RIGHT" on Newsvine is punished at a much more severe and alarmingly higher rate than "THE LEFT", and I, along with many others, would like someone to answer the question of why this is happening. And it IS happening. Everyone who has a shred of truthful integrity knows this is true and I would suspect that there are many on the left who not only agree with this, but would be supportive of it as well. If Newsvine is to be a "COMMUNITY" as it claims to be, then the powers that be need to start treating "The Vine" as a community and not as a personal platorm for advancing any certain agenda, partisan or otherwise. Here is the very first sentence about Newsvine from Wikipedia:
"Newsvine is a community-powered, collaborative journalism news website, owned by msnbc.com, which draws content from its users and syndicated content from mainstream sources such as The Associated Press."
The problem with this statement is that the "COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT" has become so extremely biased, unfair and one sided that it's not really a "COMMUNITY" anymore, it's a platform for liberals to get together and share their ideals. I mean the reality of the situation is that Newsvine is owned byMSNBC, and we all know what side of the political fence MSNBC sits on.
UN-OCCUPY NEWSVINE is the collaborative result of a plethora of members of this website who are simply fed up with the unfairness and want answers, and we will peacefully boycott this website until we are given those answers.
Comments, examples and opinions from everyone are wholeheartedly invited and nothing will be deleted unless it is deleted by the Newsvine staff. I would appeal to both sides of this issue to please not collapse any comments in the spirit of healthy debate and compromise.
The defense rests.
